Spring Forward and Check your Smoke and CO Alarms |
March 7, 2025 | |
Spring is just around the corner and this Sunday morning, March 9, 2025, at 2 a.m. is Spring Forward. A few important tasks to do while Springing Forward this weekend: Check your smoke alarms and CO alarms to make sure they are in working order. If they are older than 10 years old, it’s time to replace them. Hardwired alarms should be inspected too and if you have an alarm that takes a 9-volt battery the battery needs replaced every six months. Working smoke alarms are your best defense in surviving a fire. In 2023 77% of fatal fires did not have or could not be verified to have working smoke alarms. Practice your home fire drill to ensure everyone knows what to do when an alarm sounds and where to meet outside of your residence. Make testing the alarm a family event so everyone knows the difference between the sound of the smoke alarm and CO alarm if it activates during an emergency. If you have an alarm going off alerting you to an emergency exit the residence and call 911 from a safe location. |
