April 24, 2025

Maryland Department of Emergency Management has issued an Air Quality Alert of Yellow today due to the New Jersey Wildfire.

Yellow: Moderate Air Quality

Description: Air quality is acceptable; however, there may be some concerns for a small subset of individuals who are unusually sensitive to air pollution.
Health Effects: Individuals with respiratory or heart conditions, children, and older adults may experience health effects.
Who It Affects: Sensitive groups may experience respiratory symptoms.

From MDEM:

Light but noticeable smoke is expected to impact the area on Thursday, 24 April 2025, as a wildfire in Ocean County, New Jersey, continues to burn.

Current expectations are for a brief (1-4 hours) but notable period of smoke in the early afternoon as daytime mixing brings enhanced smoke concentrations from aloft towards the surface. Overall, PM2.5 levels are expected to stay in the Moderate range for a 24-hour period, but those particularly sensitive people should consider reducing prolonged or heavy exertion, especially during the midday hours. The presence of aged smoke, combined with plentiful sunshine and above-average temperatures, will also help support ozone formation, pushing much of the region into the Moderate to high Moderate range.

Please visit https://fire.airnow.gov/ for up-to-date air quality information. The MJOC and MDEM Duty Officer will continue to monitor the situation and share information if conditions warrant further notification.
