DIED IN THE LINE OF DUTY
Roy K. Crago | 1934 – 1999

Roy Crago's passing on December 10, 1999, marked a tragic loss for the Fallston Volunteer Fire and Ambulance Company (FVFAC) and the broader firefighting community. He met his untimely end while bravely responding to an emergency call, serving as a testament to his dedication and heroism.
On December 8, just two days before the accident, Roy was operating Engine 1312, rushing from the Upper Cross Roads Station to respond to a report of a transformer explosion. Unfortunately, during this mission, the apparatus veered off the roadway and ended up in a culvert at Fallston Road and Derby Drive. Roy was not alone on that fateful day, with fellow FVFAC members Randy Blevins and Scott Blankenship onboard. They immediately sprang into action, providing crucial medical treatment for Roy, including CPR. Despite their valiant efforts, Roy had to be transported by ambulance to Fallston General Hospital, where he ultimately succumbed to his injuries.
Roy's legacy was marked by his extensive service and commitment to the firefighting community. He joined the FVFAC in 1987 and, throughout his tenure, he held various roles, including Fire Fighter, Pump Operator/Driver, and Director (serving in the years 1993-94 and 1997-99). Furthermore, Roy's dedication extended beyond FVFAC, as he was also a member of the Jarrettsville Volunteer Fire Company, where he joined in 1973 and held the position of Ambulance Lieutenant in 1975. Additionally, prior to his time at FVFAC, he served as a member of the Kensington Volunteer Fire Company in Montgomery County, Maryland, amassing a total of 48 years of service in the fire service. His unwavering presence at the Upper Cross Roads Station was a source of inspiration and guidance for newer members, ensuring that the apparatus always had a qualified and experienced operator.
Roy Crago's memory lives on, and he was laid to rest at Highview Memorial Gardens. His sacrifice and dedication will forever be honored at the National Fallen Fire Fighters Memorial in Emmitsburg, Maryland. Roy is survived by his loving wife, Elinor, his daughter, Susan, and his grandchildren, Jessica and Matthew.
Roy Crago's commitment to serving his community and his fellow firefighters is a shining example of the selflessness and bravery that define the firefighting profession. His memory continues to inspire and remind us of the sacrifices made by first responders like him.
