William Vanarsdale (Sr.) | 1947-2016

Bill was an exemplary individual whose life was marked by a deep commitment to public service and community. As a Life Member of both the Fallston Volunteer Fire and Ambulance Company (FVFAC) and the Joppa-Magnolia Volunteer Fire Company (VFC), his influence and contributions were extensive.
In his role at FVFAC, Bill wore many hats, showcasing his versatility and dedication. He held pivotal positions, such as Assistant Fire Chief, Chief of the Department, and President, steering the organization through crucial phases of growth and development. His service during the Vietnam War in the U.S. Army further exemplified his sense of duty and courage.
Bill's impact on FVFAC extended beyond titles. He actively participated in key committees that shaped the foundation of the company, leaving a lasting imprint on its identity. His involvement in committees like the Crossroads Station Building Committee in 1990 and the Carrs Mill Station Building Committee in 1993 significantly contributed to the establishment and expansion of the FVFAC. Additionally, his instrumental role in the Apparatus Committee in 1996, overseeing the replacement of major Fire and EMS units, showcased his forward-thinking and strategic leadership.
Not only was Bill a guiding force within the FVFAC, but he also extended his mentorship to numerous individuals within the Harford County Volunteer Companies. His influence was palpable, evident in the accomplishments and leadership roles undertaken by those he mentored, including his son, William, who assumed the role of Chief at the Joppa-Magnolia Volunteer Fire Company.
Bill's legacy lives on through his family—his mother, wife Diane, sons William (Jr.) and Jeremy with wife Melissa, brother Charles and wife Judy, and sister Joyce Skillman Miller—alongside his cherished grandchildren Jordyn, Katherine, James, and Joseph. The impact he made on the community, FVFAC, and the broader emergency services will forever be remembered and appreciated.
