As we observe National Burn Awareness Week, The Fallston Volunteer Fire and Ambulance Co. along with the Office of the State Fire Marshal want to remind you that burn injuries occur frequently from other sources than fire. Each year, many young children, adolescents and adults experience serious burn injuries from chemicals, hot liquids, heated devices as well as fire related incidents.
Almost one-quarter of all burn injuries occur in children under the age of 15. Each year, over 486,000 individuals are seen in hospital emergency departments, minor emergency clinics or physician’s offices for the treatment of a burn injury in the United States. The majority of burn injuries that are treated in burn centers occur in the home followed by a much smaller percentage in the workplace. Nine out of ten people treated for fire or burn injuries were treated and released. In 2016 there were 3,390 civilian deaths from fires. The majority of these injuries were preventable. This is why the FVFAC, OSFM, and the Burn Prevention Committee of the American Burn Association want to bring awareness to the cause of such devastating and costly injuries to you and encourage you to make simple environmental and behavioral changes that have proven to mitigate this problem.
By understanding the term “Mechanisms of Burn” (M. O. B.), the many ways in which a burn injury may occur is recognized. The many causes of burns such as flames, scald, electrical, etc. need to be identified and the hazards eliminated through education, engineering, and enforcement of existing policies in some cases. Fire and Life Safety Educators, parents and others in supervisory positions need to take the opportunity to explore the various ways in which a burn can occur. Specific areas to also be addressed include the mechanism of burn injury for various age groups (the very young and the elderly) and persons with disabilities. For example, hot liquids may cause a burn in a different manner to a young child, than to an older adult. Electricity may cause an electrical burn injury in any one of many forms. By being prepared with the knowledge of the many different ways a burn injury could occur, individuals may take the necessary steps to ensure a safe environment at home, work, and play for themselves and their loved ones.
