DIED IN THE LINE OF DUTY
Roy K. Crago | 1934 – 1999
Roy Crago died on December 10, 1999 after being involved in a motor vehicle collision while responding on an emergency call. On December 8, Roy was operating Engine 1312 and responding from the Upper Cross Roads Station to a report of a transformer explosion, the apparatus left the roadway and came to rest in a culvert at Fallston Road and Derby Drive. Fallston Volunteer Fire and Ambulance Company (FVFAC) members Randy Blevins and Scott Blankenship, on board the apparatus with Roy, immediately provided medical treatment for Roy including CPR. Roy was transported by ambulance to Fallston General Hospital where he later died.
Roy, a Veteran of the United States Armed Forces and a Life Member of FVFAC, joined the fire company in 1987. During his tenure at FVFAC Roy was extremely active, holding positions that included Fire Fighter, Pump Operator/Driver, and Director (1993-94, 1997-99). In addition, Roy also served as a member of the Jarrettsville Volunteer Fire Company, joining their ranks in 1973, and held the position of Ambulance Lieutenant in 1975. Roy was also a member of the Kensington Volunteer Fire Company in Montgomery County, Maryland prior to joining the FVFAC, having served a total of 48 years in the fire service. Roy could always be counted on to be at the Upper Cross Roads Station when needed, acting as a mentor to the early cadre of members there, and insuring that the apparatus would respond with a qualified, experienced operator.
Roy is interred at Highview Memorial Gardens and will be eternally honored at the National Fallen Fire Fighters Memorial in Emmittsburg, Maryland. He is survived by his loving wife Elinor, daughter Susan, and grandchildren Jessica and Matthew.
